Healthy Living

I have started cooking on last Tuesday night (the eve of ANZAC day). What probably made me started cooking after such a long time is I am sicked of eating outside food and yearn for home-cooked. I haven't been really cooking since my uni days and that's like since 2002. I did cook like simple food while bunking in with friends when I first moved here to Melbourne and a few more times in my own kitchen. That's like once in a few weeks cos I got so sicked of eating the same thing for consecutive days in a week.

Last week dish - Stir fry minced chicken in char siew sauce with vege!
[YES, 1 Dish to RULE them all!!]

I have just finished cooking today and they are:
-Stir fry mince chicken in black bean sauce with vege (easy mah)
-Pasta
(Hopefully these will last me a few days, at least til Thurs.)

One disadvantage of cooking myself is I tend to eat a lot more! I thought I could be healthier. Perhaps my increase intake is due to my increase metabolism since I started exercising more.

Anyway, speaking of which I have been hitting the gym since early April. However, I haven't started carrying heavy weights and doubt I would since I'm trying not to put on the mass like I used to during my swimming days. I am in now for cardio, endurance-building and toning at this stage. Maybe, just maybe, I will go for power-training just to build on my strength without bulking up too much. Hopefully, I will get back into shape in a few more weeks, that is my 6-pack and 13" triceps.

My usual workout:
15-20mins on Cross-trainer
2-3 sets of the following:
10-12 reps of Chin-ups or if tired Lat Pull-down (lat or wings)
20 reps of Leg extension (quadriceps)
10-12 reps of Dips (triceps and chest)
25-30 reps of Crunch with light weight (abs) [total of min 100 reps]

I hope to hit the gym 2-4 times a week with a session of squash on Sundays.

Ok, I'm too full now cos I was being a glutton...!!!

Past Chapter: Swimming Part 1

Do you still swim?
Are you still active in swimming?
Why you didn't continue your swimming career?
Do you have any regrets in quitting?

I have been asked these questions countless times ever since I quit competitive swimming (hence, no trainings) since my swan song Malaysian Games (SukMa - Sukan Malaysia in Ipoh) in April 1998. It's been 9 years since I left the competitive scene. Before that, allow me to rewind the clock and highlight a typical life of a swimmer back in those days.

Weekdays
4-4.30am Wake up for breakfast
5am Training session starts
7.30am Heading/Reaching school
1.30pm Lunch back home
2-4.30pm Homework/Tuition class/Rest/Nap
4.30pm Training session commences (4,500m - 7,000m a session)
7.30-8pm Dinner on the go
8-10.30pm Homework/Tuition class/Other classes/Studies/Sleep

Saturdays
7am Training starts
Remaining of the day could be Homework/Tuition/Other classes/Studies/Rest
4.30pm Replacement session for any of the weekday's session

Sundays
7.30am & 4.30pm Replacement sessions

There were lots of sacrifices that needed to be made from both the swimmers' point of view as a child and our parents as well as coaches. Most of us might not have a life that a normal child would. Late nights on the eve of public holidays were rare for us as trainings were held on the morning of all public holidays, except 1st day of Chinese New Year.

Out of 365 days in a year, we would be training for a minimum of 280 days since we didn't train on Sundays, 1st day of CNY, some sick days and days off for exam preparations.

It was noted in the news here in Australia (during Ian Thorpe's press conference to announce his retirement) that swimmers have a habit of noting time to the precise minute/seconds. We have been brought up that way in the sense that we had to achieve the targets in training for programs like sprinting and endurance sets within a set time frame. After each session, a logbook has to be updated with times achieved during the session.

I was asked by my mom a couple of years back whether I have any regret for involving in competitive swimming and not having a normal childhood. I would have still involved in it but with some minor tweaks to have a little more fun. Back then, going to competitions (outstation) is like going for a holiday with a big family of which I always looked forward to since those trips are my only "holidays".

Laughters, excitements, glories, disappointments were shared together. We were all brothers and sisters in arms. Not to forget all those raggings and late night story-telling. Our bonds are still tight since we have been thru thick and thin together.

So, back to answering those questions.

I would swim if there's a need for it, like for rehabilitation of injury, get-together, charity drive. I stopped because I have had enough. I started swimming when I was 3.5 yrs' old. Additionally, I was the only one in my batch/group left and it was just different training with the younger swimmers, not as fun any more. More importantly, I was so very sicked of the politics, biasness and the personal gains by some that involved in the club/state/national levels. We swimmers were at the losing ground due to those factors.

There was also a suggestion by a fellow national swimmer, teammate, roommate and friend (who retired Dec 2006) that I should have stayed on and trained while in Australia. Perhaps, that the change of environment and better swimmers in Australia would have spurred me to go further. I have no regrets in quitting.

Swimming has taught me many things and included the following:
pressure and stress management, time management, mental strength, team spirit, determination

I am grateful to my parents for bringing swimming to me and coaches for the trainings. Swimming has certainly made me a better person.

Bday Pics

I guess pictures show a thousand words. So, here they are with majority of them taken by Shezza during the dinner. The lighting wasn't conducive for photos in the club. It was crowded too.

The first of many - with my primary school friend!

Am I lucky? Look at the smiling pretty ladies.

Someone's not happy after being tagged in the morning!

More chicks - no wonder I'm smiling and blushed (not from wine! lolz)
[I saw a choc chip on her face]

Another chick from my childhood days with her hubby. Touch her, she'll sue your butt off!

Squash mates and one of the Laus (刘) I met in Australia (5 including my doctor), I mean SQUASH mates!

Another of the Lau bros (刘兄弟) - note the bushy eyebrows [pic above as well]?

Lovely chicks with exquisite smiles. Sweet!! I don't mind taking the back seat in this...

I thought I'm the star for the night (light not on me?)!

What's there? Where's your camera? Hang on, she's supposed to be taking the shot!

If you're not here, then you're not there (I saw you both - in the above pic). Also, I have yet to receive all the photos taken that night. All the photos are full-blown 5mb each and it's taking a long time to download. Patience, people.

Too bad there wasn't a photo taken when I got the bday kiss!

Hey, how could I forget about the photos of the birthday gifts? I wouldn't dare though. Thanks heaps for the lovely gifts. It's the thought that counts. After all, most of you turned up either the paintball, the dinner or even both!

More to come once I got my hand on my bday gift to myself from Lens Lust Syndrome, the Nikkor 105mm VR Micro which I'm getting from Penang. That's for macro purposes. Meanwhile, I'll enjoy with what I have (don't you think dirty!!!).

p/s: Nikon rocks! Sorry, Shezza (did it purposely....ooopsy doopsy!)

Bday Prezzies

The dinner started off quite well, albeit some late comers (including myself)! I didn't bring my camera this time since I want to be in the photos rather than taking them. So, no photos as yet until the I'm given the photos! Be patient, yea......

Again, the best present is still the presence of my friends turning up sharing the night with me and celebrating the anniversary of my life. Cheers, guys and gals......

To my surprise, I was given presents too and I am very thankful. I have to say I felt like a kid with the presents and a lil' embarrass. Those presents included rounds of shots (I'll leave that part in the paragraphs below)! The gifts are definitely of quality products (read expensive). I am brought up to enjoy the simple things in life and whatever that have been provided for by my parents. So, I never expect I would be given any presents on my birthdays.

Now, it comes to the shots! I was given 3 different shots of whatever potent stuffs in each shot and 2 beers within the first hour! That's a record for me by itself! The sequence went like this:

1st shot - some brown-colour liquid bought by Fred; burning sensation in my throat & tummy
1st beer by by Jun
2nd shot - it's something strong requested by Shezza
2nd beer by Andre
3rd shot - the honour went to Stella who again asked for something potent

And some friends still trying to drown me with more rounds but I needed some fresh air. So, I headed up to light up the Cohiba (so much for the fresh air) given to me the year before.

Then, there was the "dare" that Joe, Fred, Arjun and Kevin put forward! The dare was to ask for a kiss from any girl by informing her that it's my birthday. Well, I have to say it must be the alcohol running my system. I went up to the female bartender who was taking a break and ask for a kiss! She gladly accepted that request! Woohooo....It's just about having some fun and at least experience something for the first time. As mentioned by some, a Once in a Lifetime Experience.

4th shot - a cognac treat by the bartender who said it goes well with cigar!

By then, I was a lil' woozy.......

But Andre insisted (again) for one more shot....

5th shot - a clear liquid (some Korean with 60% alco) by Andre

That was it! It made my tummy churning and I felt the sour taste in my mouth 15-20mins after the drink. Oh yeah, I puked but I kept it in my mouth before rushing to get myself a toilet bowl! That's first of the 3 rounds of puking. Came out with a clearer head but barely 20mins I went searching for my favourite bowl again! This time, a lot more came out including food stuffs!

Finally, I decided to call it a night (I think around 1.30am) with Stella being the chauffeur. I probably dozed off while in the car. Once we reached outside my place, there goes the 3rd and final round! All I knew was I could balance myself way more than before and with the presents (including Shirbliss' 2 shopping bags) in hand, I walked up 3 flights of stairs to my unit. Changed and slept. Gosh, I didn't brush my teeth yet!

[History repeated itself. Always drunk/puked on my birthday while in Down Under]

Photos to be uploaded next time. Need to brush my teeth now after getting up with clearer mind around 10.30am!

Battered & Bruised

It was D Day for us 10 girls and 10 guys to head to Port Melbourne, destination: Melbourne Indoor Paintball (MIP)! The anticipation for the game has been in our minds for at least a week. Most were excited yet afraid of the pain upon being TAGGED! Yes, the term for being shot is TAGGED.

(After the game and started raining, I guess to clean us up....)

We were divided into 2 Teams - Red & Grey.
In the Red Corner stood Annabel, Cindy, Christine, Li Tse, Nica, Vicky, Ferry, Fred, Joe and I. Yep, Red is made up of 6 girls and 4 guys!

In the Grey Corner stood Irene, Lyn Li, Simran, Stella, Aman, Arjun, Bence, Lucas (missing fro the group pic), Ping and Sam.

Was the Red Team intimidated by the bigger and stronger Grey Team? We took the game by storm, mind you! Ferocious Fred ran and came back with the "injured Superman"! Incidentally, Fred is wearing a Superman T. Does that make him the Superman's Saviour?! Hmmm.....The ladies played well too. I got shot at the back by my teammate (whoever s/he is).

I was tagged on the head (where it's not covered) 3 times, TWICE by Arjun and once by Lucas!! I got my revenge on Arjun in the second last game and took out my "anger" on Bence in the final game! Some mentioned that I was the moving target since I was wearing the yellow track bottom. Can you find the swollen bruises on my thigh in the pic below? I have been thru worse before when played during my uni days but I'm not asking any of you to tagged me more next time, if there is next time. For now I have discovered/found 3 bruises on my head, 2 on my left thigh, 2 on my back and a few minor ones with cuts on my arms/knuckles. The bruises will be more visible tomorrow!

(Pls ignore the hair; I know Aman and Arjun are hairier though!)

It was a great outing, barring the agony. The best part for me is seeing the smiles on the faces and hearing the laughters after each and every game (6 in total)! It's one of the best birthdays I ever have.

I'm honoured to have the support of Cindy and Nica for coming in as replacements to make up the numbers after some last minute pull-out due to personal reasons. Those who didn't join, you have missed the "moments"! For those who were new to paintball, you can say you're no longer a Paintball Virgin!

Got to get some rest and continue the celebration later tonight.......

p/s: Seems like I'm blogging everyday but it won't be every day once I get busy with work and photography..........

Medical Jargons

It's 10pm on a Friday night and I'm at home. Not because I don't want to head out but I want to have an earlier night on the night before an early Saturday and probably long night. Besides, quite a number have exams in a few weeks.

I have gotten my x-ray results back this morning. Nothing to worry too much about but was informed that my lower disc is slightly slipped but there is no pain whatsoever. I have to admit that the medical jargons in the report really do not resemble English! Some of the listed ones:
  • kypho-scoliosis (what the?!)
  • retrolisthesis of L5/S1 (which means slip disc and I thought was a thesis!)
  • pedicles (confused? I was and still am)
  • paravertebral (headache almost struck by the time I got to this line in the report)
Man (I mean doctors in general), can't you write the report in plain English for people like me who knows nothing much about all those jargons! It would have meant a lot more if those are translated to plain English.

Tomorrow, some of my friends and I will be paintballing (or pain-balling)! It has been in our plan for some months now but no one actually tried to make it happened til few weeks back. I guess it's tough to organise something that requires a big group. I had to admit that it's tough to get the 20 players on one day for 2-hour session and in the morning. There were pull-outs but some managed dragged their friends/relatives. However, the one thing that I have to take my hats off is my 2 other friends willingly agreed to come along for the fun and to make up the numbers (after being persuaded by another friend.....you know who you are!). Certainly, I will make it up to you by spraying more pellets on you!!!

A number of us haven't played it before but I have and twice during my uni days! It's a great team-building game too. Anyway, I hope it will be a great outing with plenty of fun and laughters albeit the pain. Most of us will be battered and bruised by lunch time.

Will I ever plan an outing that requires a huge group? Probably not........I guess it depends on the group or the purpose of the function/outing/event. I still remember pulling off the appreciation dinner for our swimming coach back in 2005. Obviously, that was done with the help and support from various swimmers from near and afar.
Glowing tribute to a coach - Part 1 (The Star, 10 Sep 2005)
Glowing tribute to a coach - Part 2 (The Star, 10 Sep 2005)

Anyway, I will continue watching the movie Pay It Forward before hitting the sack........

Peace out

Life-changing Event

Recently, I lost someone I'm closed to and it has made me realised that I should appreciate and cherish those around me. I should and will express myself sooner rather than later. Procrastinations too may lead to regrets later in life. Lives would have been lost, friends might have grown apart, memories could have been erased......The "What ifs" would have been too late by then.

I have decided to enjoy life a little more and sharing those moments with friends certainly will put smiles on my face. Weeks back, I was told not to live life too seriously. I suppose seriousness has crept into me with the growing responsibilities, commitments and expectations.

Ok, I'm cutting the seriousness in me........and slowly unleashing the cheekiness....
Hope those around me will be able to take it when it struck them.

Ooops, it's passed my bedtime......Slumberland here I come! Can't hardly wait for the weekend to come.......

Take it easier and hang loose.........

April Babies

Finally, I jumped on the blogging world. I guess this would also allow me a channel to express myself as well as posting some photos (lots) taken along the way as can be seen in Who ALSE Photographics.

The latest pic taken over the weekend:

While I'm at it, I'll take this opportunity to wish the following whom I know are April babies "A Very Happy Birthday":
  • kennkriss
  • john
  • liann
  • shezz
  • ev
  • pin
  • hwang
  • yvecmyen
  • mag
  • sookfun
  • whoalse
In fact, some of us are only days apart (especially those swimmers, or ex now, whom I grew up with). We will all be wiser......I hope!

It's 5.30am and have been up since 4. I should try to get some shut-eyes......
Cherios......

Up again....
On a different note, the recent Virginia Tech Uni shooting that had 32 innocent lives killed (excluding the shooter himself) just proved that life is short and full of surprises!
I will leave this topic for the coming post.
